13,500 disabled people in Guernsey<\/h1><\/div>

Did You Know? was the result of a think tank meeting with Lloyds Bank UK where we shared our challenges around raising awareness around disability in Guernsey. Because we are around the figures, members stories all the time we realised maybe we weren’t sharing this enough locally as there was a misunderstanding about the number of people affected by Disability 13,000+ Carers 4,000+ the diversity of hidden disabilities and things like 1,200+ wheel chair users.<\/p>\n

It ran deeper with the lack of knowledge about the discrimination that takes place, lack of access and understanding of the barriers to a full life. the Result is our advent calendar style project called Did You Know? please feel free to share widely.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

1 December<\/h2>

There are 13,500 disabled people in Guernsey <\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Did you know? People experiencing significant difficulty are part of an estimated total 21% of the population in Guernsey and Alderney with a long term condition that affects their day to day life.<\/p>\n

There are 4,000 Islanders (est. 6% of the population) in Guernsey and Alderney with a long-term condition and who experience\u00a0significant difficulty in everyday life<\/p>\n

One in four households (27%) contains at least one person with a disability, and this equates to an estimated 7,352 households across Guernsey and Alderney<\/p>\n

Although the survey is nearly 10 years old, disability increases with an aging population so the figures will be similar or even higher. In 2022 an attitude survey is due<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

There are more than 4,000+ unpaid carers in Guernsey<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Did You Know? There are more than 4,000 unpaid carers in #Guernsey. @CarersGuernsey are an independent charity providing support to anyone who cares unpaid for a friend or family member who due to illness, disability, mental health problems or addiction.<\/p>\n

CarersGuernsey particularly welcomes that carers are being recognised as a protected ground, in their own right, in the new discrimination legislation. Carers often experience social exclusion & financial hardship. 72% have suffered mental ill health as a result of caring<\/p>\n

Did You Know? 61% of Carers have suffered physical ill health as a result of caring.<\/p>\n

With 1 in 9 employees thought to be carers of someone who is older, disabled or seriously ill, it makes sense for employers to proactively support carers to juggle work with their caring responsibilities and thereby improve their recruitment and retention and employee morale<\/p>\n

After a long wait & years of campaigning, @Govgg approved anti-discrimination legislation proposals in July 2020. @CarersGuernseybelieves this represents an important step forward in recognising the rights of carers, who are often isolated & forgotten members of our society<\/p>\n

Carers Guernsey wants a society that respects, values and supports carers: where we can all care for loved ones without putting our own lives on hold and where no one has to care alone<\/p>\n

The 3rd December is IDPwD<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Did You Know? #Guernsey is one of the only countries in the world with no disability discrimination legislation and not signed up to the UNCRPD!<\/p>\n

The annual observance of the UN IDPwD aims to: promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society and development, and to increase awareness of the situation of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life<\/p>\n

Ant\u00f3nio Guterres \u2018I urge all countries to fully implement the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, increase accessibility, and dismantle legal, social, economic and other barriers with the active involvement of persons with disabilities and their representative organizations\u2019<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

That hidden disabilities are 80% of all disabilities <\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>

4th Dec – Did You Know? that hidden disabilities are 80% of all disabilities but because they are unseen they often go unrecognised and supported.\u00a0From today until 9th\u00a0December we will highlight some of our local #HiddenDisabilities<\/b> charities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
