Think differently about Disability

#MakeAChange

In conjunction with the United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPwD), our campaigns encourage organisations, community groups and individuals in Guernsey to ‘Think Differently about Disability’ and #MakeAChange for greater inclusivity and accessibility, especially for our 13,000 disabled islanders and 4,000+ carers.

Why do we need to ‘Think Differently about Disability’?

We want to take a full and active part in the community, to eat out, shop, work, travel, play sport, be educated, be entertained, to take part in the full range of activities the island offers. Currently there are a number of barriers that prevent many disabled islanders from doing that, many perceptions are they are physical i.e. wheelchair accessibility but they are also key factors around attitudes & behaviours around disability and inclusion. What can we do differently?

With a gap in Guernsey around legalisation and information, the We All Matter Eh? team have designed a number of Change Cards, these are hints and tips on specific areas and are designed to assist and signpost to resources to help #MakeAChange. We are growing the number of cards in response to feedback but the current suite include: Building & design, tourism, businesses, free disability awareness training including language and hidden disabilities, web accessibility and more … Please check the Change Cards here and then register your intent to #MakeAChange so we can support you & showcase the changes taking place, we will celebrate these on the official UN Day, which is the 3rd December each year.

#MakeAChange Celebrations

Each year we celebrate the changes businesses, organisations and individuals have made (nominated by our members) at the awards on 3rd December.

Fundraising

As well as celebrating all the changes made in Guernsey there will also be opportunities to fundraise through organising and joining in with events and activities. This is a key part of the campaign so we can all publically acknowledge the changes and celebrate inclusion. If you are looking for ideas for an event, posters or a sponsorship form, you can download our fundraising pack. The campaign will run throughout Autumn with a grandstand finish on Monday 3rd December. You can donate via giving.gg
