Think differently about Disability

#MakeAChange 2019

Our ongoing #MakeAChange campaign encourages organisations, community groups and individuals in Guernsey to ‘Think Differently about Disability’ and #MakeAChange for greater inclusivity and accessibility, especially for our 13,000 disabled islanders and 4,000+ carers.

Why do we need to ‘Think Differently about Disability’?

We want to take a full and active part in the community, to eat out, shop, work, travel, play sport, be educated, be entertained, to take part in the full range of activities the island offers. Currently there are a number of barriers that prevent many disabled islanders from doing that, many perceptions are they are physical i.e. wheelchair accessibility but they are also key factors around attitudes & behaviours around disability and inclusion. What can we do differently?

With a gap in Guernsey around legalisation and information, the We All Matter Eh? team have designed a number of Change Cards, these are hints and tips on specific areas and are designed to assist and signpost to resources to help #MakeAChange. We are growing the number of cards in response to feedback but the current suite include: Building & design, tourism, businesses, free disability awareness training including language and hidden disabilities, web accessibility and more … Please check the Change Cards here

2019 Accessible activities and events

In 2019 we will start the year with our Youth Series, where we encourage young people to get involved in Accessible Activities in sport and the arts.

Lets Go Mobility – weekly training sessions with St Martins Primary school (Tuesday 1-2pm Beau Sejour) and then a sports day in July 2019

A range of new School of Popular Music (SOPM) sessions for children with disabilities, followed by a short performance

These are generously sponsored by Butterfield

#MakeAChange Celebrations

at the end of each year we celebrate the changes people, organisations and groups have made on UN International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPwD) – Tuesday 3rd December in 2019

As well as celebrating all the changes made in Guernsey there will also be opportunities to fundraise throughout the year. Our main events tend to be around International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPwD). You can donate at anytime via the Association of Guernsey Charities fundraising website – via GDA Guernsey Disability Alliance

For all our articles, press releases, etc go to our resources section.

UN International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPwD) is 3rd December each year, you can find out more about the UN and International Day of Persons with Disability (IDPwD) click here
