These tips have been designed to illustrate some key considerations when designing or adapting spaces for people with neurological conditions
such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Asperger’s.

All of these tips are explained in detail on Create’s fact sheet which can be found in our resources section, click here or online at www.create-architecture.com

  1. Allow greater amounts of space for circulation around a building or space
  2. Ensure visibility throughout the building and make the plan legible
  3. Define the use of each room and avoid multi-functional spaces
  4. Provide lots of natural light to rooms
  5. Design a transition space between outside and inside. This can be as simple as a chair in the hallway.
  6. Reduce stress by ensuring good acoustics within the building
  7. Avoid fluorescent lighting due to flickering
  8. Consider flexibility in how the building could be adapted as the individual’s needs change
  9. Curved walls can help facilitate movement around a building
  10. Avoid strong patterns and bold colours in wall and floor nishes
